Signal Radar #1: The FCC Moves on Work Drones

1. The FCC wants new work drones off the US market. Public Notice DA 26-758 proposes to end imports of foreign-made drones with thermal, LiDAR, spray, or docking capability — the category of the $39,999 Agras T100 we covered. Owned drones keep flying; imports get a 180-day wind-down. Comments close September 2. Verdict: WORTH IT — if a spray or thermal drone is in your plan, buy an authorized unit now.
2. Unitree R1 humanoid: now $4,900, in stock. The R1 lists at $4,900, down from $5,900 at launch, 29 kg, 123 cm tall. Its maker just went public in Shanghai at a $9 billion valuation. Verdict: SKIP — it is a developer platform. It will not stock a shelf or sweep a floor for you yet.
3. ChatGPT free tier: unlimited text chats. OpenAI removed message caps on free text conversations and made GPT-5.6 Luna the default. OpenAI claims 62% fewer factual errors than the prior model. Limits remain on files, images, and voice. Verdict: WORTH IT — the price is $0. If AI drafting is on your list, the excuse is gone.
4. EGO Nexus 1400W: backup power from mower batteries. The Nexus PST1405-2 runs on up to four of EGO’s 56V tool batteries — 1,400W continuous, 2,100W peak, 200W solar input. Amazon has it at $799 with two 6.0Ah batteries, a tracked low. Verdict: WORTH IT — if you already own EGO tools. Otherwise a dedicated LFP station gives more watt-hours per dollar.
5. VCOPTER Falcon Mini: a $290 two-rotor drone. A 249 g bicopter — two tilting props instead of four — with 4K/30 video and about 30 minutes of flight, $289.99 on Amazon. New Atlas found wind gusts can spin it 180 degrees. Verdict: SKIP for work. Clever engineering, but a field camera that loses to wind is a toy.
