Langmuir CrossFire PRO: A Plasma Table for One-Off Steel Parts

A small zinc-plated steel bracket costs $29 from an online cutting service if you order one. Order ten of the same bracket and the price drops to $3 each. That gap between a one-off and a batch is the entire case for owning a CNC plasma table — and the cheapest credible one in the US comes to $5,133 as a working stack.
The Machine
The CrossFire PRO is a steel gantry that drags a plasma torch across a sheet of metal on a program. It costs $3,195 and shows in stock today. Freight is a flat $249 in the contiguous US, and Langmuir estimates two to three business days to ship.
The cutting envelope is 48.25 by 33.3 inches, with 2.75 inches of powered Z travel plus three more of manual head adjustment. The frame weighs 223 pounds. Motion comes from NEMA 23 stepper motors — 284 oz-in on X, two more on Y, 180 oz-in on Z — turning ACME lead screws with anti-backlash nuts. Langmuir publishes 0.002 inches of positional accuracy over 12 inches, 0.0005-inch repeatability, a top speed of 300 inches per minute, and a rated capacity of 1-inch steel plate. A stainless water table sits under the slats.
The box does not contain a plasma cutter, a computer, or an air compressor. Langmuir lists compatible cutters from $995 to $3,449 and sells its own Razorweld Razorcut 45 with machine torch at $1,289, in stock, adjustable from 20 to 45 amps. Automatic torch height control is another $400. The table runs FireControl from a Windows PC over USB, and Langmuir’s FAQ puts the table itself on a standard 120V/15A outlet while recommending 220V plasma cutters.
There is a bigger sibling. The CrossFire PRO MAX starts at $3,395, gives a true 48-by-48-inch surface — 43% more cutting area — a 3.5-inch water table, and support for cutters up to 105 amps. Langmuir’s complete PRO MAX package with a 45-amp cutter is $5,595, shipping in about two weeks rather than two days.
The Numbers
The benchmark is the thing a table like this replaces: sending the file to an online cutting service. SendCutSend publishes actual part prices in its own cost breakdown, which is rarer in this industry than it should be.

The assumptions, in the open. The part is a 6-by-4-inch bracket in 16-gauge mild steel, 24 square inches. Online Metals sells a 48-by-48-inch sheet of 16 ga hot rolled A1011 for $92.01, which works out to $5.75 a square foot, so the steel in that bracket is 96 cents before nesting waste.
Savings on a one-off: $29.00 minus $0.96 is $28.04. Divide the $5,133 stack by that and the table pays for itself at 183 parts. Now batch the same bracket in tens. The service charges $3.00, savings fall to $2.04, and break-even moves to 2,516 parts.
We excluded consumables, electricity, the air compressor, the PC and your Saturday. All of them push both numbers up. None of them change the shape of the answer: this machine is bought with one-offs, not with production runs.
What Breaks
Positional accuracy is not part tolerance. The 0.002 inches Langmuir publishes describes what the gantry does. Plasma adds kerf width, edge bevel and dross on the underside, and none of that is in the spec sheet. Langmuir does not publish a finished-part tolerance: DATA NOT AVAILABLE FROM SOURCE. A bolt pattern that has to line up on the first try still wants a drill press afterward.
The air compressor is a hole in the budget you cannot size from this page. Langmuir’s FAQ says “a typical shop air compressor is required to operate any plasma cutter” and then sends you to the cutter manufacturer for the CFM at a given PSI. The number that decides whether the compressor in your garage is enough is not on the table’s spec sheet, and a compressor that cannot keep up does not fail loudly — it just ruins cuts.
Consumables are a subscription nobody mentions at checkout. Nozzles are $29.95 for five, electrodes $29.95 for five, so a fresh set is $11.98. Langmuir publishes no arc-hour life for either, so the per-part figure in our math above is the one number we could not source. Budget it blind for the first month and then measure your own.
Plasma only cuts electrically conductive metal. No acrylic, no wood, no composites — all of which a cutting service will do from the same file. The water table needs water, and water plus bare steel plus air produces rust and sludge you eventually have to dispose of. And the PRO drives from a Windows PC over USB, which means the machine in your shop inherits whatever that laptop does at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday.
Who Should Buy This
The shop that makes ones and twos, first. Race fabricators, trailer and gate builders, sign shops, restoration work — anyone whose week is 15 different brackets rather than 500 of the same one. At the service’s one-off price of $29, fifteen parts a week clears the $5,133 stack in about three months. The $29 and the $5,133 are published. The fifteen parts a week is your number, and you should count them honestly before you order.
The repair business, second. The part that pays for a plasma table is usually the one nobody sells anymore: a bracket off a discontinued implement, a mount for a machine older than the shop. There is no catalog price to compare against, only downtime, and downtime is the expensive thing.
Not for: anyone ordering identical parts in tens, where the math says 2,516 and means never. Not for tight-tolerance thin sheet, where a laser’s edge is the product. Not for anyone who needs powder coat, plating or tapped holes on the same invoice. And not for a shop without 220V and a real compressor, because the table is the part of this stack that gives the least trouble.
